The physical characteristics of bedrock geology are mapped by geologists based on rock types (lithology), age (based on fossil or isotopic information) and structural data to define map-units and represent their distribution. For the purposes of this project, the geologist’s mapping of bedrock types are reviewed and grouped together based upon their derivation of soils with ecological implications to landscapes and sites where bedrock is at or near (within +/-1 m) the surface. The bedrock geogroups are not relevant where surficial materials are consistent blankets (>1, more often > several metres; geogroup 997) and/or where soils are either Organic (Fibrisol to Humisol) or have substantial surface organic accumulations (LFH and/or peaty surface horizons) – a widespread situation within Boreal Ecozones.
